The Story of British Motorsport

You do not have to be a motorsport enthusiast to know that the name Silverstone is synonymous with British motor racing. With nearly 70 years of racing history, Silverstone has a glorious heritage that is recognised and admired around the world. Since 1950, the circuit has played host to the Formula One British Grand Prix a record 51 times.

The exhibition will be housed within the only remaining WWII hangar on the site, just to the left of the main entrance. The hangar will be fully refurbished and re-clad to create a fantastic, authentic backdrop.

Displays will use the latest technology to tell the compelling stories of the people that have been part of the site’s history and those who have played an important role in the history of British motor racing: from medieval monks and WW2 air crew to the racing drivers, riders, engineers, mechanics and marshals of today.

‘Motorsport Valley’- a world-leading cluster of 4000 high performance technology and motor sport companies – has grown up around Silverstone, no doubt helped by the fact that top international motor sport has taken place at the circuit since 1948. Eight of the eleven constructor teams and many supply chain companies that serve the motor sport industry, are based in the region. By telling this extraordinary story of the UK’s central role in technological innovation and leadership within global motor sport, we aim to help inspire the next generation of world class engineers and motor sport experts.

This cutting edge tourist attraction will cleverly offer different levels of information and engagement to give it a broad appeal, ensuring that it provides an enjoyable experience for all. The hard-core motor racing enthusiast will be well catered for through the digitisation of previously unseen motor racing source material from the BRDC Archive and other collections.

A selection of the most important and striking examples of cars and motorcycles whose provenance is tied to Silverstone will be on display. However this this will not be a static museum about cars and the development of the combustion engine! Instead our ambition is for the exhibition to be highly animated and interactive, telling the stories of human endeavour, great sporting rivalries and the discovery of ingenious engineering solutions to challenging technical issues.

Inspiring Future Engineers

The Silverstone Experience will use the technical heritage of British motor racing to inspire the high performance engineers of the future. Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) will be intrinsically woven into the fabric of the displays, building educational value into every aspect of the visit. Young and old alike will be inspired by the achievements of the brilliant engineers of Motorsport Valley over the last seven decades and will be encouraged to find out more about them, aspiring to emulate their achievements. Although The Silverstone Experience will have structured learning for educational visits, everyone who visits will leave knowing much more than they did before they arrived. Education – when set in the glamorous context of motor racing – is certain to be both engaging and exciting.

A formal education programme aimed at children from five upwards – linked to the STEM subjects and to include workshops, tours and downloadable resources – will attract over 30,000 school visits each year. A learning studio will provide 200m² of flexible space, equipped to facilitate inspiring interactive sessions.

The Silverstone Experience will also offer opportunities for work experience, training and apprenticeships. Supported by our project patrons and sponsors we will support young engineers of the future through our awards programme.

The Exhibition

The Silverstone Experience will be a multi-layered experience that can be enjoyed by all visitors, from racing enthusiasts to motor sport novices. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to:

  • Follow the circuit on two floors – The first floor tells the story of how the Silverstone site evolved to become a world-class racing venue, concluding with the first International Grand Prix in 1948. The ground floor brings 70 years of motor sport history at Silverstone to life.
  • Touch an 8m wide interactive table to reveal the stories behind the corner names.
  • Discover RAF Silverstone’s role in WW2 and how it gave the circuit its distinctive shape.
  • Explore an interactive wall which contrasts what it takes to host the F1 Grand Prix today with Jimmy Brown’s challenge of preparing the airfield for the 1948 Grand Prix in just 10 weeks.
  • Immerse yourself in the sounds, smells and images of 70 years of racing history.
  • Get up close to iconic racing cars and bikes from all eras. Relive classic Silverstone moments and delve into interactive databases within the era stations.
  • Step out of the exhibition space onto a panoramic interactive viewing gallery overlooking the circuit. Digital viewfinders overlay the history of the site onto the modern circuit.
  • Meet the legends of Silverstone and British Motor sport in the interactive hall of fame.
  • Work as a team to set new records in the interactive pit lane challenge.
  • Design your own 500cc car for the first (legal) competitive race at Silverstone (won by Spike Rhiando in the Flying Banana!)
  • Learn about the development of Motorsport Valley and the discovery of ingenious engineering solutions to challenging technical issues.
  • Meet the engineers in the technology zone, try out your own experiments and compare car and bike designs across the eras.
  • Have you got what it takes? Test yourself and discover what it takes to be a racing driver, from diet and driving / riding technique to reaction time and psychology.
  • Conclude your journey with a Virtual Reality (VR) lap of the Silverstone circuit at the wheel of your own car. Every visitor to Silverstone wonders what it might be like to race a few laps of the hallowed Grand Prix circuit. The VR finale to The Silverstone Experience will allow all visitors to experience the circuit not only from the driver’s seat, but in the company of their heroes, whichever decade they hail from. Over the course of the lap you are transported through different racing eras, and even into the cockpit of a Wellington bomber on take-off down Wellington straight. Experience the thrill of taking the chequered flag in front of  a packed crowd! Unlike any other experience available, the VR finale to the exhibition will leave an indelible memory at the end of truly unique visit.

Architecture & Design

The exhibition has being designed by sector specialists Mather and Co whose previous projects include the National Football Museum, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, The Springbok Experience, The Olympic Museum, Chelsea FC Museum and the Warwickshire County Cricket Museum. The Project Architect, heading up the building services team, is Jane Lock-Smith of Cube Design who was awarded Architect of the year at the Women in Construction Awards 2016.

The audio visual and multi-media content for the exhibition will be created and produced by Wentworth Media & Arts and Moonlake Entertainment. Wentworth and Moonlake will also be producing a feature length documentary film entitled “Silverstone – The Cradle of Motorsports” for release in 2018.

BRDC Archive & Collections

The BRDC Archive Collection charts the history of the club, its members, Silverstone Circuit and motor sport more widely from 1928 to the present day. It is currently stored in cramped conditions without the necessary environmental controls and protection, in the Luffield Abbey Farmhouse. In order to protect this vital collection and make it more accessible it needs to be moved to a purpose-built archive as soon as possible.

The Silverstone Experience has a new state-of-the-art Collections and Research Centre adjacent to the hangar. The Centre will include an environmentally-conditioned store to house the BRDC Archive and will enable us to fulfil a project objective of protecting other important motor sport collections that may otherwise be lost, sold or broken up.

The unique BRDC archive is central to providing the content for the exhibition. The archive will be made more accessible through digitising the contents and creating an on-line access strategy.

The Collections and Research Centre will also be home to the extensive BRDC library and will provide a learning centre and study space for school groups, the public and researchers.

Partnership Opportunities

We are seeking a select number of authentic and credible partners who can help elevate the customer journey and experience, through their motor sport stories, association, assets, products and services. We have created a partnership framework that enables relationships to be tailored in line with the areas and elements of the greatest relevance to a partner’s business needs.

To find out more information on how you can be a part of this exciting new visitor attraction, please contact either James Hughes-Mulligan or Andy Muggleton on 0207 842 8230 or email andy.muggleton@silverstone-experience.co.uk.
