The British Motor Cycle Racing Club, known as BMCRC or “Bemsee”, is the World’s oldest motorcycle racing club and one of the UK’s largest. Founded in 1909, it was originally based at the classic Brooklands circuit near Weybridge in Surrey and is now located at offices in Romford, Essex.

This heritage is significant as the Club enjoys a position at the heart of two and three wheeled racing in the UK, many stars past and present owed their development years to this Club.

The depth of our marshalling and officials community is also key as many past racers, their family members, friends and colleagues maintain an active involvement in assisting the Club on racedays and beyond.

History at Silverstone

In the 50’s and early 60’s Bemsee meetings were quite regular at Silverstone and a feature of those meetings was “Silverstone Saturday”.

This picture shows a grid formation at Silverstone from around 1950 – look at the crowds in the stands. It’s what folks used to do before National TV and computer games.

bmcrc-grid-resizeMany of the Club’s Trophies at meetings like this were issued for fastest laps, or best performances. One of them is still in our possession and not used at our year end awards, it’s the Bob Winter Trophy. So that will be awarded on our resurrected “Silverstone Saturday” for the Rider of the Day Best Performance from the Saturday races – so it could go to someone from any class.

The Bob Winter Trophy was originally presented to the Club by Mr E.R. Winter who was Managing Director of Comerfords Ltd, it was originally awarded at Bemsee’s Silverstone Saturday for the fastest lap by a 3-wheeler.

The Club regularly used the National Circuit at Silverstone for many seasons. In 2014 we become the first Motorcycle Club to book what was the old Southern Circuit, now renamed the International, since the refurbishment and creation of the Wing Complex – for a weekend motorcycle racing event. The circuit was and is used regularly for trackdays, this was the first bike race meeting running from the Wing.

The Mellano Trophy

The Mellano Trophy, valued at 250 guineas when it was presented to the British Motorcycle Racing club in 1925 by Mr AV Mellano of the Hutchinson Tyre Company, is to this day Bemsee’s most treasured award. The BMCRC ran their Hutchinson 100 meetings at Brands Hatch from 1966 until it was dropped by the club from the International calendar in 1977, and replaced it with the two-day Sir Ben Ball Clubman races, still on the reverse direction of the Brands Hatch GP circuit. During the 11 years the Mellano Trophy was presented at Brands Hatch it was twice won by German sidecar crews in 1969 and ‘70. Prior to this it was Kiwi Hugh Anderson, John Hartle and Phil Read. Then from 1971 Pete Williams twice, Dave Potter once and Barry Sheene completed a hattrick of wins in 1976, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable episode at Bands Hatch.
