Perez: I know I have the speed
Sergio Perez says he has shown he has the speed to do a job for Ferrari if given the task of partnering Fernando Alonso in 2013
Sergio Perez insists he could do a job for Ferrari if given the opportunity to line up alongside Fernando Alonso for the 2013 season.
The Mexican is one of the drivers being mentioned as a possible replacement for Felipe Massa next year if Ferrari elected to drop him at the end of the current campaign.
Perez already has links with Ferrari as a part of its Young Driver Academy and has shown his speed this season with two podium finishes giving him almost double the points of Massa, who has once again struggled in the shadow of team-mate Fernando Alonso.
With F1 now in its summer break, Perez admitted that it will soon be time for him to sort his plans for 2013 and he said he felt he had shown what he is capable of.
"It's been a very busy season so far, but the moment will come soon for me to think about my future," he was quoted by Sporting Life. "If there is an opportunity with them (Ferrari) or another team then it's the time to know.
"I will have to see what the options are, and from that I will decide. But I think I have done a very good job this season. I have proven I have the speed, and the consistency as well."
Perez added that he was happy with the way his season had gone so far, having already scored 33 points more than he did in the whole of 2011.
"I've been a little up and down, but many things have to be taken into account," he said. "We cannot forget we're still a midfield team, so I'm comfortable with the position I'm in.
"My main target will be to keep having good races, and from then I will decide very soon what my future is going to be."
