Silverstone has announced that British motorcycle racer Maria Costello MBE, the first woman to achieve a podium in the history of the Isle of Man motorcycle races, will be the guest instructor for the first ever women-only group on a Bike Track Day at the Northamptonshire circuit on Thursday 03 October.
The group is aimed at female riders of all abilities, inviting them to join like-minded women and enjoy a track day under the guidance of Costello and a team of expert instructors. What makes the day even more special is that Maria Costello hails from Northampton and has plenty of experience at her local circuit.
Costello, who was awarded an MBE for services to motorcycling in 2009, has a long list of accomplishments on two wheels, achieving a Guinness World Record in 2004 by becoming the fastest woman to lap the Isle of Man TT course, at an average speed of 114.73 mph. She also made history at the 2005 Manx Grand Prix when she took third place in the Ultra Lightweight category, becoming the first ever woman to take a podium finish in either a TT or Manx GP.
Speaking about the ladies-only track day at Silverstone, Maria commented: “I have set up this event in conjunction with Silverstone with the interests of fellow female bikers in mind. My Facebook group ‘Woman on a motorcycle’ has over 1,500 members and is growing daily, and I quickly realised that there are female bikers out there looking to enjoy track days where they can build their confidence on two wheels in a less intimidating environment alongside other women.
“Silverstone is my local track and I’m really looking forward to meeting lots of women who want to build their riding skills and ultimately have a great day out, both on and off the circuit.”
Running out of The Wing Pits and Paddock, the day will provide two-wheeled enthusiasts with the chance to ride in the tyre tracks of MotoGP™, World Superbike and British Superbike legends, and benefit from plenty of track time and one-to-one tuition from Maria.
In addition to the women-only group, there are two other riding groups available on the day, open to both men and women:
•Street Sport #1 (£129 per person) is ideal for first-time track riders, or for those with limited experience
•Street Sport #2 (£129 per person) is aimed at more experienced road or track riders who prefer to take their fun seriously, prepare their machinery properly and want room on the track to hone their skills
•Women-only group (£129 per person) is aimed at female riders of all abilities, who want to enjoy their motorcycling with like-minded women under the tutelage of Maria Costello
One of the riders already booked on to the women-only Bike Track Day at Silverstone is Fiona Macpherson, who commented: “As a new recruit to track days this year, I am now a self-confessed addict. I have attended two Silverstone Bike Track Days so far, and the management and level of instruction on the day far outweighed expectations. I am really excited about the first women-only day on October 03, where I’ll be coached by an amazing female role model in Maria Costello, and meet other women who like to go fast on two wheels and want to develop their riding skills.”
In addition to the lengthy on track action, attendees will also enjoy expert tuition, a £10 food voucher to exchange in the Media Café, all-day refreshments in the garage areas and optional tours of The Wing complex. Mechanic, suspension and tyre services, as well as bike and gear hire will also be available on the day from IDP Moto.
