Northampton’s sports stars lap it up at Silverstone in support of Northampton General Hospital
Saints, Steelbacks and Cobblers tackle Silverstone driving challenge
Players from the county’s three major sports teams – The Cobblers, Saints & Steelbacks – jumped behind the wheel of some exhilarating racing cars yesterday (11 December), at Silverstone, the Home of British motor sport. The aim of the day was to celebrate 2013 being one of the most successful years ever for Northampton sport and to help raise funds for the County’s local hospital, Northampton General.
Five players from each Club formed teams to tackle driving challenges around Silverstone. The circuit’s professional instructors were also on hand to offer the players expert tips and advice as they embarked on their four-wheeled adventure.
The challenge was set up to raise money in aid of Northampton General’s Chemotherapy Department and five seats were auctioned off to the general public, with the winning bidders forming a team that took on the County’s sporting finest.
The Caterham 7 challenge became the main focus of the on-track action, with the Northants Steelbacks claiming the winner’s trophy after setting the fastest combined time in the ‘Team Competition’. Adding to the cricketers’ success, Alex Wakely impressed the instructors most, setting the individual fastest lap time and taking the prize for the ‘Driver of the Day.’
Club players and representatives taking part in the Silverstone Challenge day included:
• The Steelbacks: Alex Wakely, Steven Crook, James Middlebrook, Ben Duckett and Phil Rowe
• The Saints: Kahn Fotuali’i, Stephen Myler, Christian Day, Rob Verbakel and Ryan Glynn
• The Cobblers: Danny Emerton, David Moyo, Dean Snedker, JJ Hooper and Jonathan Hogan
