Chevrolet to leave BTCC

Chevrolet announces it will leave the BTCC to focus on the defence of its World Touring Car Championship crown in 2012

Chevrolet has confirmed that it will focus its attention on retaining the World Touring Car Championship title in 2012 and not return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The RML-run factory team secured the championship title in 2010 with Jason Plato, with the double champion then winning more races than anyone else last year despite failing to successfully defend the crown.

However, with Plato having moved to MG for the 2012 season, Chevrolet and RML have now confirmed that it will focus on retaining the WTCC title during the year ahead and will not field a team in the British series.

"We understand Chevrolet's decision to concentrate its motorsport programme on the WTCC in 2012," RML managing director George Lendrum said. "Despite the fact that we won't be involved in 2012, RML remain long term supporters of the BTCC and hope to be back in the future."

Chevrolet UK managing director Mark Terry meanwhile was quick to thank the manufacturer's supporters for their backing during two seasons running the Cruze in the series.

"I would like to wish RML the very best for 2012," he said, "and thank our many fans for their support over the last two years.
