THE INSIDE WORD FROM SILVERSTONE

MG return, Plato to lead entry

The BTCC's worst kept secret is made official - MG will return to the series in 2012 with a two-car team headed by double champion Jason Plato

After weeks of rumours, MG has confirmed that it will return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship with a two-car team headed by double champion Jason Plato.

Triple Eight Race Engineering will build and run the two MG6 GTs, which will be built to the BTCC's Next Generation Touring Car regulations.

Plato will be joined at the wheel by Andy Neate, while backing from Tesco Momentum 99 and energy drink KX will see the team entered under the MG KX Momentum Racing banner.

"It's really exciting to be involved in a brand new all-British team," Plato said, "and it's just brilliant that the iconic name of MG will be back on the track."

The return of MG to the series comes after it previously competed as a works entry from 2001 to 2003, with West Surrey Racing responsible for running the ZS model.

MG were last represented when Kartworld competed with a ZS back in 2008.

The decision to return to the BTCC comes with the manufacturer - now under new Chinese ownership - having returned to the British market with the MG6 model.

"We are delighted that the new MG6 will be seen by millions of fans in Britain and beyond, MG Motor sales and marketing director Guy Jones said, "and this continues the famous sporting lineage of the brand."
