THE INSIDE WORD FROM SILVERSTONE

Thompson joins Airwaves for finale

James Thompson joins Airwaves Racing for the BTCC season finale at Silverstone

James Thompson will return to the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship this weekend at Silverstone after being drafted into the Airwaves Racing line-up for the season finale.

The double champion will replace Michael Caine in the team's third Ford Focus after being asked to support Mat Jackson in his bid to secure the championship title, with Jackson one of five men still in contention for the crown.

Thompson started the season racing for Volvo in Sweden and last appeared in the BTCC with Team Dynamics back in 2009.

The 37-year-old will go into the weekend having had the chance to sample the Focus in a pre-event test and said he was keen to try and hit the ground running.

"I'm genuinely excited to be coming back to compete in the finale of the Championship," he said. "I'm here to lend support to Mat and the Airwaves team in their quest for the title and try not to cause too much mischief out on the track!

"Although it's never easy to step straight into a new car, it's still got four wheels and steering wheel like the rest of them so I should hope that all my years' racing will deliver a great result for the team at Silverstone."

Team boss David Bartrum welcomed Thompson - who tested an Airwaves BMW back in 2009 - into his line-up and said he was hopeful he would run at the front.

"We've got to support Mat and give him the best chance in the last three races," he said. "It's not over for us in the overall points as the top three drivers are sure to battle with each other. We hope that James can jump in the car and get straight onto the pace of the front runners.

"Michael has had a taster of the BTCC to help him with his plans for next year. I'm delighted with the progress he made; he had a mountain to climb in a very short time with no testing."
