THE INSIDE WORD FROM SILVERSTONE

Lowes fastest at Donington from Aitchison

Alex Lowes sets the pace in free testing at Donington Park, while Splitlath Redmond Aprilia's new signing Mark Aitchison out-paces title contenders Shane Byrne and Michael Laverty.

Alex Lowes gave himself and WFR Honda a boost ahead of the final third of the 2012 MCE British Superbike Championship as he topped the timesheets in free testing at Donington Park.

The youngster has enjoyed some positive results in recent rounds, finishing inside the top ten in ten of the last 11 races to put himself in with a shout of making the top six shootout.

Having now tested at Cadwell Park and Donington Park, the final two venues before the Showdown cut-off point, in the past week, Lowes is looking forward to getting into racing there.

"It was a good day for us, especially as the conditions improved this afternoon which meant we could continue working through some changes we wanted to make to the rear suspension with some new parts from K-Tech," he told the BSB website.

"The WFR Honda has been working well today and with our test last week at Cadwell Park and the one today we are happy that we have improved at both tracks which is important if we want to make the top six in the Showdown."

Attended by a number of the BSB teams, the most surprising result from the test came courtesy of Mark Aitchison, who propelled the Splitlath Redmond Aprilia up to second position on the timesheets. A potential big step forward for the Splitlath team, which is yet to score a point this season, Aitchison made his debut with the outfit last time out at Brands Hatch.

Title contenders Shane Byrne and Michael Laverty were second and third fastest, ahead of James Westmoreland on the second of the WFR Hondas, Buildbase BMW's Peter Hickman and new MSS Bathams Kawasaki signing Danny Buchan.

Other notable attendees at Donington Park included Gary Mason on the Pr1mo Bournemouth Kawasaki, ex-World Supersport rider Robbin Harms on the Doodson Honda and Alex Polita riding a Ducati Coventry backed Panigale, though times were not revealed for the latter two competitors.
