SUMO POWER WINS AT PORTIMAO
Sumo Power GT wins the FIA GT1 World Championship qualifying race in the Algarve
Sumo Power pair Michael Krumm and Peter Dumbreck have taken their first win of the FIA GT1 World Championship season after clinching victory in the Portimao qualifying race.
The pair came out on top of a three-way fight for victory with Krumm running second through the first half of the race before handing the Nissan GT-R over to team-mate Dumbreck.
The Scot then battled past the Phoenix Carsport Corvette of Marc Hennerici before taking the lead of the race and was able to pull away to take a slender victory.
The Vitaphone Maserati of Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini clinched second after Bartels also got ahead of Hennerici in the closing stages with the Corvette settling for third having struggled with tyre wear through the second half of the race.
"I was aware that we'd be on the TV screens, so I was being very clean, and both of us being very fair," Dumbreck said. "The last thing I wanted was to put him [Hennerici] in a half spin or jeopardise my second place, so it was very important that I kept it clean and took my time.
"I could see that he was having a little more trouble than I was with the tyres. Mine really only kicked in the last couple of laps. I was struggling with the rear, but up until then, the car was fantastic. I could hold Andrea in the beginning. I think he came out one lap earlier than me, so his tyres were warmer. There were a couple of moments where it was quite close, but then, as I realised I was catching Marc I just tried to keep my head down and Andrea was coming with me, and I took my time to get by."
Darren Turner and Tomas Enge took fourth place in the leading Aston Martin after a quick pit-stop allowed Turner to jump up the order while five different marques filled the top five places thanks to a fine drive from Richard Westbrook and Thomas Mutsch saw them come through the field in the first Ford GT to take fifth from the back of the grid.
The Triple H Team Hegersport Maserati of Alex Muller and Altfrid Heger.
