Checa to assist Ducati with GP12 test?

With just one day remaining for Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden to test the 1000cc Ducati GP12, new WSBK champion Carlos Checa could assume testing duties instead.

Carlos Checa has hinted he may be drafted in to help Ducati with its development of the much vaunted 1000cc GP12 MotoGP machine, in an effort to get around the testing restrictions.

Checa, who was crowned World Superbike Champion for the first time at Magny-Cours over the weekend, is an experienced MotoGP competitor having raced in the premier motorcycling class between 1995 and 2007, making him an obvious choice should Ducati look beyond its own riders for help in developing the bike.

Indeed, compared to Honda and Yamaha, Ducati has been busiest developing its 1000cc effort this season, meaning it has just one day available to test the bike with riders Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden as per the regulations.

As such, Checa revealed to motoworld.es that he could be on the GP12 before he even has a chance to sample Ducati's new Superbike, the 1199 Panigale.

"I am now in Ducati and now we have to decide for 2012, which we know will be with the same bike. And later we'll see. In fact I may soon test the 1000 MotoGP Ducati because they cannot do many tests with Valentino and asked me if I could do it. I think if I test a motorcycle it will be likely be the MotoGP before the Superbike."

Checa is expected to defend his World Superbike crown with Althea Racing in 2012.
