Hayden steps in for Rossi on GP12 test

A hairline fracture for Valentino Rossi means team-mate Nicky Hayden steps in to test 1000cc Ducati GP12 on Thursday.

Valentino Rossi's first-lap crash in the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday (pictured) was not without consequences, although the initial medical examination suggested otherwise.

Due to the severity of the pain and swelling in his left hand, the Italian underwent additional X-rays on Tuesday that revealed a hairline fracture at the arthrodesis of the first and second phalanx (following a fall at Assen in 1995) of the pinky finger on his left hand.

Rossi's participation in the forthcoming Australian Grand Prix, at Phillip Island on October 16, is not in doubt.

However today (Thursday) it will be team-mate Nicky Hayden that rides the 1000cc GP12 at Jerez, using the last of the eight rider/days of in-season testing allowed by each MotoGP manufacturer with a 2012 bike.

Hayden had previously indicated that he wouldn't test the bike again until after the end of the racing season.

The American has ridden the GP12 twice before - at Jerez in April and Mugello in June - while Rossi has completed five days on the bike.

Honda has three of its eight 1000cc rider/test days remaining, while Yamaha has four. Suzuki is yet to test with its MotoGP rider.

The 2011 MotoGP season ends at Valencia on November 6, after which a two-day test will be held, which is when Rossi will next ride the 1000cc bike.
