Talmacsi switches to rallying

Former 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi is to embark on a new career after signing to compete in his first full season of rallying.

Former 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi is to embark on a new career after signing to compete in his first full season of rallying.

The 30-year-old Hungarian was a nine-time race winner in the 125cc class and later competed in the MotoGP and Moto2 categories, but was unable to find a ride for the 2011 season.

The 2007 world champion will contest this year's Hungarian Rally Championship, which includes his home round of the IRC (Intercontinental Rally Challenge), now considered a rival for the WRC.

"I achieved everything I wanted in MotoGP," said Talmacsi, who will drive a Ralliart Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. "As I experience rallying I feel more motivated. It's one of the most complex technical sports and this is a big challenge for me. This year I will try to learn as much as possible."

Talmacsi finished fifth out of 140 entrants on his rallying debut at the Szilveszter Rally late last season.
