Silverstone steps in to save Study Centre

Silverstone Circuits Limited has stepped in to ensure the Silverstone Study Centre continues to inspire locals despite being faced with goverment budget cuts.

Having been faced with closure following the announcement of government budget cuts to education, Silverstone Circuits Limited has stepped in to ensure the hi-tech Silverstone Study Centre – developed in conjunction with Northamptonshire County Council and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DfES) in 2007 – continues to engage, enrich and inspire local children and young people in the learning process. Silverstone will now exclusively continue to oversee the important initiative, extending its offering to include local and national schools, colleges and universities.

The Silverstone Study Centre utilises its unique setting and motor sports-themed, interactive environment to promote motivation and development throughout primary and secondary education, up to and including Sixth Form level. The Study Centre programmes have already proven to be a success amongst local educational facilities, with Silverstone regularly hosting school groups and tours at the circuit.

Silverstone’s educational guided tours of the venue, tailored to sections of the National Curriculum, take pupils on an exciting and engaging journey of the historical importance of the circuit, and its transition from a WWII airfield into the British hub of motor sport that it is today.

In-keeping with aspects of History, Geography, Maths, English and Science for key stages 1 to 3, and business studies for key stage 4 and beyond, visiting pupils can explore many significant sites around the circuit, while taking part in curriculum themed activities. The circuit has a unique offering, delivering educational material in a fun, legendary setting and providing a day visitors won’t forget.

The educational tours are supported by an optional two hour classroom workshop, drawing on the pupils’ experiences of the day with stimulating supporting activities. Additionally a ‘study pack’ is available for teachers to download, covering elements of the Key Stages 1-4 syllabuses in a wide variety of subjects, to help keep costs at a minimum.

The Silverstone Study Centre also offers a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths day, designed to embrace many aspects of the STEM curriculum. Available for Key Stage 2 and 3, the four hour sessions are based on Silverstone and motor sport, bringing science and maths to life. The Study Centre also offers KS4 and Sixth Form Business Studies, Race to Success (a take on the government initiative ‘Playing for Success’), Multi-Media training, Holiday Clubs, staff incentives and is an Apple Regional Training Centre.

Further enhancing the circuit’s education offering, in 2011 Silverstone was announced as a location for The Department for Education’s flagship University Technical Colleges (UTC). The UTC: Silverstone Academy, in conjunction with Tresham College of Further and Higher Education and The University of Northampton, will provide high quality skills training to 14 -19 year olds in high performance engineering and event management, alongside core curriculum study. With development plans already in place, Silverstone’s UTC is on schedule to welcome students in September 2013 and will be accepting applications from autumn of this year.

Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, said, ““Education is extremely important to Silverstone. I am a trustee and governor of two of our local schools, and, as a business, we are always looking at ways to support the local community. Education is a fundamental part of what we do and the Study Centre is hugely important factor in the development of Silverstone. It is a shame that public sector cuts impact on these initiatives, but we are pleased to be able to step in to build on the excellent results the Study Centre has already achieved. Combined with the UTC, we will strive to have our programmes and establishments recognised nationally, as Silverstone develops as a centre for academic excellence.”
