History of FIA WEC Series

The WEC has truly carved out its place on the world’s motorsport stage, consistently attracting both teams and drivers at the highest level, establishing a rapidly increasing digital fanbase, more TV viewers and, of course, wide-ranging international media coverage. Under the steady leadership of the promoter, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, and the stewardship of the FIA, the WEC offers a multitude of opportunities to manufacturers, teams, engineers and drivers to compete in a high profile and prestigious calendar of races, based around one of the world’s leading sporting events, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The technical regulations, which act as the reference point for endurance racing on a global basis, offer a platform which allows manufacturers to demonstrate designs of the future.  These include the newly introduced Hypercars, hybrid and hydrogen technologies, sustainable development in areas such as the reduction of fuel consumption and the testing of road relevant technologies for production cars of the future, and all with a close eye on cost control. For these automotive giants, it remains a wholly relevant form of motorsport…as it has been since the earliest days of motoring and the very first 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1923.

In 2020-2021 (Season 9), the WEC calendar will include two new additions – Monza in Italy and Kyalami in South Africa – to complement the traditional and popular visits to historic Silverstone, Fuji (Japan), Sebring (USA) and Spa (Belgium).  Add in a visit to a spectacular venue such as Bahrain and a season finale at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in France and it will be a WEC season like no other.
