Bad weather forecast forces 2018 Silverstone GoPro British Grand Prix MotoGP™ schedule change.
Forecasted torrential rain and unpredictable conditions have forced race organisers to alter the race schedule ahead of tomorrow’s GoPro British MotoGP™ Grand Prix race at Silverstone.
The decision was made by Dorna, the FIM (Federation Internationale Motorcyclisme), Silverstone Circuits and was also in consultation with the race teams. The decision was made to move the premier class MotoGP™ race will now take place at 11.30am rather than the originally scheduled time of 1pm in the programme. The 17-lap Moto3™ race is now scheduled for 1pm, with Moto2™ staying in its original 2.30pm timeslot.
Rider safety is of paramount importance to Silverstone, MotoGP™ and FIM, and today’s severe rain led to flooded track conditions because of the severity of the rain in a short period of time.
With more heavy and sustained rain forecast for tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, the decision to bring the MotoGP™ race forward to be the first race of the day at 11.30 has been taken.
Silverstone Managing Director Stuart Pringle said: “This is a decision that was not taken lightly but the risk to the chances of not running a MotoGP™ race at all if we had stuck to the original schedule was too great.
“This was a difficult decision to make but, ultimately, there is nothing more important to all of us than rider safety. We hope MotoGP™ race fans who attended this weekend’s event, understand the difficult decision forced upon race organisers Dorna and Silverstone.”
