Silverstone Celebrates Volunteers Week
06 June 2023Did you know that a huge part of what makes the British Grand Prix and all of our major events here at Silverstone possible are our incredible volunteers? To celebrate volunteers week (1-7 June 2023) - we spoke to some of our incredible Race Maker community about why they love being part of the Silverstone volunteering community.
"Hi everyone, we are Karen and Mark. This photo was taken on Zone 8 where we are customer service volunteers. Suffice to say from our smiles we loved every second of our time volunteering as Race Makers at Silverstone. Every shift brought amazing experiences with lovely customer interactions as we helped people to enjoy their day.
We have both volunteered previously at major sporting events, local clubs and also children’s charities. However, this was the first time we have ever volunteered in the same place together.
With this week being volunteer week, we both encourage others to get involved in volunteering. You meet other inspiring volunteers, learn new skills and, most importantly, help ensure the events are delivered safely. To top it all, smiles and fun are encouraged and you leave each shift knowing you made a difference. We hope to see you join us at forthcoming Silverstone events." - Karen & Mark Willis
"Best thing about a Race Maker is meeting new people and sending them on their way with a smile, putting them at ease and helping them on their journey. . I have been a volunteer for 6 years and now I’m a Team Leader too. Favourite events are F1 and Classic.
At last year’s Moto GP I assisted the Commonwealth Games Men Silver Medallist from the Decathlon, who had arrived with his family injured from his event He was unable to climb any stairs and after spotting him talking to Security, I kindly intervened and offered him my assistance to the Disabled section at Club A, he and his family were extremely grateful and could not thank me enough." - Chris Sheldon
"So I’ve been a Race Maker since 2019. I love spending time with likeminded people and seeing people enjoy the events. It’s a great feeling when you can help people have the best weekend possible! My favourite event was last year’s British Grand Prix, especially helping out with the pit walk and seeing families getting up close to the drivers getting excited for the weekend ahead." - Ben Ashcroft
"I am an avid sports fan who caught the volunteering bug in 2015 at the RWC. Since then have thrown myself in to large sporting events (CWC 19, ICC Trophy, Saracens Rugby) but by far the most rewarding and enjoyable has been my time as a Race Maker at Silverstone. Coupled with my love of all things F1, I get the chance to share my enthusiasm with fans from all over. I love helping people, seeing my actions directly improving their day - and the free ice creams from Punters are reward enough!" - Gary Thorpe
Biggest thanks to all who volunteer at Silverstone! It's going to be another amazing summer, we'll see you all very soon!
