Tickets will be available on the gate.

Formula Student (FS) is the world’s largest student engineering design competition with entries from around the world, including USA, Australia, India, Canada and the Far East, as well as a wealth of European teams. Entrants will compete to design, build and race a formula style single seater racing car – providing undergraduates with invaluable real-world project experience as they begin their engineering career.

FS showcases the best and brightest mechanical engineering talent, with graduates regularly filling roles in top automotive and motorsport organisations, including F1 teams.  It’s the latter that has earned the competition strong support with Ross Brawn OBE as Patron and the likes of James Allison, Paddy Lowe and David Brabham as Ambassadors.

As a spectator experience, FS gives you the opportunity to get up close and personal with some phenomenal combustion engines, electric and even fully autonomous single seater racing cars built entirely by students who just might go on to design, build or race the cars of the future.

The Challenge

Taking part in Formula Student gives participants the chance to demonstrate their technical, engineering, design, and manufacturing skills.

Each team is tasked to produce a prototype for a single-seat race car for autocross or sprint racing, and present it to a hypothetical manufacturing firm. The car must be low in cost, easy to maintain, and reliable, with high performance in terms of its acceleration, braking, and handling qualities. During the competition each team must demonstrate the logic behind your proposal and must be able to demonstrate that it can support a viable business model for both parties.

Each team also goes through a rigorous testing process with the car:

Static Events:

  • Design, Cost and Sustainability, and Business Presentation Judging
  • Technical and Safety Scrutineering
  • Tilt Test
  • Brake and Noise Test

Dynamic Events:

  • Skid Pad (Figure of 8)
  • Sprint
  • Acceleration
  • Endurance
  • Fuel Economy
