The British Motorcycle Racing Club has a very long association with Silverstone going back to the late 40’s. BMCRC were without a base when the club was reformed in 1947. There were countless airfields no longer required by the military and offered clubs plenty of scope to convert them into motorcycle racing circuits. They settled for an airfield called Haddenham, near Dunholme in Lincolnshire, and organised eight meetings there over two years. It wasn’t an immediate success but it gave the club a base from which to build on, and from 1949 until 1966 BMCRC became the main organisers of motor cycle racing at Silverstone.
After the Second World War the Hutchinson 100 meeting carried on at Dunholme, in Lincolnshire and in 1947 it then took place at Silverstone in 1949. In 1950 and ’51 it was won by Cyril Smith and Eric Oliver respectively, both riding 596cc Watsonian Nortons. In 1953 Cecil Sandford clinched the trophy riding a 125cc MV and he repeated this feat on board a 124cc Mondial in 1956 and ‘57. Bob McIntyre successfully preceded Mike Hailwood’s back-to-back wins on board Ducatis in 1959 and ‘60. Jim Redman also took back-to-back wins on factory 250 Hondas in 1962 and ’63, the last ‘Hutch’ to be staged at Silverstone.

Recent stars have started their careers at BMCRC that has fed the top echelons of our sport with riders such as Casey Stoner, Cal Crutchlow, Chaz Davies, Danny Webb, Bradley Smith, Danny Buchan and Tommy Hill.

The Kawasaki Junior Cup is of particular interest – a major series for riders from 13-18 yrs, giving them the chance to run out on the big circuits in the UK. We added a Senior Series in recent years and that’s proved successful – you should see the kids beating the older riders hands down. They are all on the same machinery, the Kawasaki Ninja 300/400 twin.
