F1 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix results: Norris back on top at the Hungaroring

Lando Norris claimed victory at the 2026 Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix after recovering from an early mistake at the Hungaroring, with Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli completing the podium.

The McLaren driver started from pole and held off team-mate Oscar Piastri into Turn 1, only to run wide at Turn 2 and hand the lead to the Australian. Norris spent much of the race unable to find a way back past his team-mate, before benefiting from a coming-together between Piastri and Carlos Sainz to move ahead, going on to win 15 seconds clear of Verstappen.

Verstappen finished second for Red Bull Racing, with Antonelli third for Mercedes. Charles Leclerc took fourth for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton fifth after a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

George Russell produced an impressive recovery of his own, fighting back from an early anti-stall drop to 21st to finish seventh, while Arvid Lindblad added another point to his 2026 tally with 10th place.

Oscar Piastri's afternoon ended in retirement on Lap 56 having led for a large portion of the race, while Oliver Bearman slipped from 16th after the opening lap to finish 19th following a penalty for ignoring blue flags.

2026 Hungarian Grand Prix results

Norris recovers from Turn 2 error to win

Lando Norris converted pole position into an early lead, holding off a challenge from team-mate Oscar Piastri into Turn 1. The McLaren driver ran wide at Turn 2 moments later, however, allowing Piastri through into the lead.

Norris was unable to find a way back past his team-mate for a long stretch of the race, before a coming-together between Piastri – hoping to stay ahead of Norris with an earlier stop – and backmarker Carlos Sainz's Williams cost the Australian time and handed Norris the advantage. He pitted on Lap 39 and emerged ahead of Piastri, before taking the lead from Antonelli – who was yet to stop – on Lap 46.

Norris then began to open a gap over Piastri in the final stint, before his team-mate's race ended in retirement on Lap 56. Norris made his final stop during the Virtual Safety Car that followed and went on to take the chequered flag 15 seconds clear of Verstappen to claim victory.

Hamilton penalised after late scramble for third

Lewis Hamilton, who qualified second but started fifth after a grid penalty, made early progress to move up to fourth, getting around team-mate Charles Leclerc in the opening exchanges. He then attacked Verstappen for third, on Lap 2 and Lap 3, without success.

Hamilton pitted on Lap 13, switching from the Soft tyres to the Hard tyres and rejoining in ninth, passing Lindblad around the outside on his out-lap. The undercut worked in his favour when Verstappen pitted a lap later, Hamilton emerging ahead - though Verstappen hit back immediately, retaking the position with a lunge into Turn 1 on Lap 16.

A second stop on Lap 30 dropped Hamilton behind Hadjar, but he reclaimed the position into Turn 1 a lap later. He was promoted to second when Piastri retired on Lap 56, before making his own stop under the Virtual Safety Car. 

Hamilton emerged ahead of Antonelli, but had to concede the position after the Mercedes driver was shown to be ahead at the pit exit line, while Verstappen – who stayed out – took second for himself.

Hamilton was later handed a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, which contributed to him finishing fifth behind Leclerc at the chequered flag.

Russell recovers from anti-stall drama to finish seventh

George Russell, who started sixth after benefiting from Antonelli's grid penalty, suffered an anti-stall off the line that dropped him to 21st by the end of the opening lap.

The Mercedes driver fought back, position by position, over the remainder of the race, eventually crossing the line seventh to complete an impressive recovery drive - and a welcome return to points after his retirement at Spa.

Lindblad scores again as Bearman struggles

Arvid Lindblad qualified ninth and held the position through the opening lap, eventually finishing 10th to add another point to his 2026 tally.

Oliver Bearman moved up to 16th on the opening lap having qualified 17th, but the Haas driver eventually crossed the line 19th after picking up a five-second penalty for ignoring blue flags.
