F1 2026 Italian Grand Prix results: Antonelli wins from 19th at Monza

Kimi Antonelli produced one of the drives of the 2026 Formula 1 season to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, recovering from 19th on the grid to beat Mercedes team-mate George Russell and Max Verstappen.

The Italian started from the back after taking an engine penalty, but carved his way through the field before engaging Russell in a thrilling battle for the lead during the second half of the race.

Russell eventually had to settle for second, while Verstappen completed the podium after being unable to match the recovering Mercedes. Lando Norris finished fourth after a late move on Oscar Piastri, with Lewis Hamilton sixth for Ferrari.

Further back, Arvid Lindblad scored another strong result with eighth, while Charles Leclerc's home race ended after just one lap following a crash at Parabolica.

2026 Italian Grand Prix results

Antonelli storms from 19th to win at Monza

Kimi Antonelli completed a remarkable recovery drive at Monza, winning the Italian Grand Prix after starting 19th on the grid.

The Mercedes driver immediately set about making up ground, climbing to 13th on the opening lap before a red flag caused by Charles Leclerc's crash at Parabolica brought the field back together.

Antonelli restarted 12th and then began slicing through the pack once again. By the end of the opening lap after the restart, he was already up to eighth.

He continued his charge, passing Lando Norris for sixth on Lap 7 before overtaking Pierre Gasly into Parabolica three laps later. On Lap 13, Antonelli dispatched Oscar Piastri to move into third before taking second from Verstappen into the second chicane on Lap 16.

Then came the battle for the lead. Antonelli passed Russell into Turn 1 on Lap 18, only for the Mercedes drivers to swap positions repeatedly over the following laps. Russell retook the lead on Lap 20, but Antonelli responded later that lap before Russell reclaimed it once again on Lap 22.

Antonelli then made his move around the outside of the second chicane to take the lead, with the pair continuing their spectacular duel until the Virtual Safety Car brought a brief pause on Lap 29.

Antonelli pitted and rejoined sixth with fresh Mediums at his disposal, while Russell stayed out on the Hard tyres. 

By the end of Lap 48 he was right on Russell's rear wing, and Antonelli finally completed the move on Lap 50. From there, he managed the gap to the flag to secure a sensational victory from 19th on the grid.

Russell settles for second after intense duel

George Russell initially held position behind polesitter Pierre Gasly, before moving into the lead with a decisive move into Turn 1 at the start of the second lap.

The red flag on Lap 3 then reset the race, and Russell maintained control at the restart.

Max Verstappen took the lead from him on Lap 12, but Russell responded three laps later to reclaim first place. What followed was an extraordinary battle with team-mate Antonelli, with the lead changing hands repeatedly between Laps 18 and 22.

Russell eventually retook the lead once more before Antonelli moved ahead around the outside of the second chicane.

The late phase brought more pressure. Russell had stayed out hoping to make his Hard tyres go the distance, but Antonelli caught him at the end of Lap 48, and Russell ran wide while attempting to defend, allowing his team-mate through on Lap 50.

He crossed the line second, narrowly missing out on victory but securing another strong haul of points for Mercedes.

Norris snatches fourth from Piastri

Lando Norris endured a difficult afternoon after qualifying ninth, but climbed to seventh on the opening lap before moving up another place at Charles Leclerc's expense. 

Following the restart, Norris dropped behind Arvid Lindblad briefly but recovered the position before settling into the midfield battle. Antonelli passed him on Lap 7, leaving Norris to fight his way back towards the leading group.

The McLaren driver spent the closing stages battling team-mate Oscar Piastri, eventually launching a successful attack into Ascari on the final lap to snatch fourth place.

Hamilton struggles to sixth

Lewis Hamilton started fifth but, after being promoted up the grid because of Piastri's penalty, endured a frustrating afternoon.

He was pushed wide by Leclerc at Turn 2 on the opening lap and, as a result, dropped to 10th, before climbing back through the order following Leclerc's crash.

Hamilton moved into the top five after the restart and then passed Piastri on Lap 7 to take fourth. 

A move for third on Gasly into the first chicane on Lap 10 initially succeeded, but Hamilton ran wide at the second chicane and lost several places. He eventually recovered to sixth, scoring eight points for Ferrari.

Lindblad shines again as Bearman fades

Arvid Lindblad continued his impressive 2026 campaign with another points finish at Monza. 

Starting 10th, he gained two places on the opening lap and then moved up to sixth after Leclerc's crash. He briefly held off Norris after the restart before slipping back during the next few laps.

Lindblad ultimately settled into eighth place, adding another four points to his championship tally.

Ollie Bearman started 12th and climbed to ninth on the opening lap before maintaining the position after the red flag restart. He briefly recovered ninth again on Lap 7, but gradually slipped backwards through the remainder of the race and finished 15th.
