Kimi Antonelli on track in 2026 F1 pre-season testing

2026 F1 pre-season testing results: Antonelli leads Day 2 of second test

The second day of running at the Bahrain International Circuit saw Mercedes strengthen its grip on the timesheets, as Kimi Antonelli set the fastest lap of the test so far during Day 2 of the second 2026 F1 pre-season test.

After Lando Norris had led the way during Thursday morning’s session, Antonelli lowered the benchmark in the afternoon with a lap of 1:32.803, ensuring Mercedes finished top of the pile on both days this week.

Antonelli lowers the benchmark

Norris set the early pace during the morning session with a lap of 1:33.453, but lap times dropped steadily once the afternoon running got underway. Max Verstappen briefly moved to the top of the order before Oscar Piastri edged ahead for McLaren, only for Antonelli to reclaim P1 during the final hour.

The Italian’s time left him 0.058 seconds clear of Piastri, with Verstappen third after a highly productive day that saw the four-time World Champion complete 139 laps, the highest total of the session.

Interruptions and long runs

For the second day running, it was an Aston Martin that brought out the red flags. This time, the afternoon session was briefly halted when Fernando Alonso stopped his Aston Martin on track. Unlike his team-mate yesterday, the Spaniard was unable to rejoin the session afterwards, finishing the day with 68 laps completed.

Hamilton, fourth overall, made up for lost mileage earlier in the test, with Ferrari debuting an innovative upside-down rear wing solution.
