Silverstone to deliver F1 Sprint action at the 2027 British Grand Prix
10 September 2026The Formula 1 Sprint Race format returns to Silverstone for a second successive year, with the 2027 British Grand Prix welcoming three days of competitive F1 track action and the high-energy schedule from 01-04 July.
Next year's race weekend promises another unmissable celebration of speed, drama and unforgettable moments. From Sprint Qualifying on Friday, to a flat-out Sprint Race and Grand Prix Qualifying on Saturday, and culminating in the main event on Sunday, this is a weekend format built for wall-to-wall entertainment.
Silverstone made history as one of the first three circuits to host a Sprint race back in 2021, and welcomed the format back in style in 2026. Now it's set for another instalment in 2027, as one of a growing number of Sprint weekends on the F1 calendar.
What is the F1 Sprint format?
The F1 Sprint is a flat-out, 100km dash to the chequered flag with no mandatory pit stops and wheel-to-wheel racing from lights out to the finish. It adds an extra, fully competitive race into the Grand Prix weekend, on top of the usual Grand Prix, practice and qualifying sessions.
How is the grid set for an F1 Sprint Race?
A standard Grand Prix weekend runs across five track sessions over three days: FP1 and FP2 on Friday, FP3 and Qualifying on Saturday, then the Grand Prix itself on Sunday. On a Sprint weekend, Friday's FP2 is swapped for Sprint Qualifying, which sets Saturday's Sprint Race grid. It follows the same format as Grand Prix qualifying, just with shorter SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3 sessions.
How does an F1 Sprint work?
Saturday morning's FP3 makes way for the 100km Sprint Race itself. Lasting around 30 minutes, the Sprint sees the full grid go flat-out for the entire distance, with no mandatory pit stops required.
How many points are awarded in an F1 Sprint?
The top eight finishers score points in an F1 Sprint Race, from 8 points for the winner down to 1 point for eighth place. These are added to a driver's points from the Grand Prix itself, meaning a Sprint weekend offers a maximum of 33 points on the table – compared with 25 at a standard Grand Prix.
What happened at the last Silverstone Sprint?
Silverstone's most recent Sprint, in 2026, went down to the wire. Kimi Antonelli hunted down pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton to snatch the lead on the Hangar Straight, holding on to take a maiden Sprint win by 2.7 seconds. Lando Norris completed the podium, with George Russell and Charles Leclerc rounding out the top five.
