Silverstone Becomes Signatory of the Sport for Nature Framework, Strengthening Commitment to Protect and Restore Nature
28 July 2025Silverstone Circuit is proud to announce it has become a signatory of the Sport for Nature Framework, joining a growing global movement that harnesses the power of sport to protect and restore nature. This landmark commitment builds on Silverstone’s broader Shift to Zero strategy and its recent biodiversity partnership with the National Trust at Stowe Gardens, reinforcing the venue’s ambition to lead in sustainability both on and off the track.
Silverstone joins a growing community of sporting organisations — such as the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA); the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme), and McLaren Racing as well as beyond motorsport, organisations such as The R&A
Launched by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and partners, the Sport for Nature Framework sets out four core principles designed to guide sports organisations in embedding nature protection into their activities:
- Protect and restore nature in and around sports venues and events.
Silverstone is enhancing local ecosystems through initiatives like its collaboration with the National Trust, which promotes biodiversity across neighbouring landscapes. - Promote responsible nature-based tourism and recreation.
The circuit is engaging visitors and fans with programmes that encourage respectful interaction with the surrounding natural environment, aligning motorsport passion with conservation awareness. - Use sports’ influence to inspire and educate.
Through events, partnerships and communications, Silverstone is leveraging its global platform to raise awareness of the vital role nature plays for communities and sport alike. - Reduce environmental impacts and contribute to nature-positive outcomes.
Central to Silverstone’s Shift to Zero strategy is reducing carbon emissions and ensuring operations support broader nature-positive goals.
Stuart Pringle, CEO, Silverstone, commented:
“Joining the Sport for Nature Framework reflects our deep belief that the future of sport must be intrinsically linked with the health of the natural world. Through our partnership with the National Trust and wider sustainability initiatives, we are not just reducing impact — we are actively helping to restore biodiversity and protect these precious ecosystems for generations to come.”
Meredith McCurdy, Programme Leader, Sports for Nature, IUCN, added:
“Silverstone’s commitment to the Sports for Nature Framework is a testament to the evolving role of sustainability in sport and the inclusion of the protection and restoration of nature. With its Shift to Zero strategy and inspiring biodiversity partnership with the National Trust, Silverstone brings both vision and action to our community. We are thrilled to welcome them as a signatory and look forward to learning from their initiatives as we work together to ensure that nature has a permanent place on the sporting agenda.”
Silverstone looks forward to collaborating with fellow signatories and stakeholders across the sports and conservation sectors to champion nature at the heart of sporting excellence.
