The Comeback is Complete, as Marc Marquez Wins the 2025 MotoGP World Championship
29 September 2025Marc Marquez once again became MotoGP World Champion following this weekend’s action at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan, in what is being described by many as the greatest comeback in sporting history.
The mission was clear for Marquez as he came into the weekend at Mobility Resort Motegi - outscore his closest rival (and brother) Alex Marquez by at least three points across the weekend, and his ninth World Championship, seventh in the MotoGP class, would be his.
Whilst many race weekends in the 2025 MotoGP season have seen Marc Marquez ‘do the Double’ by winning both the Sprint and Grand Prix, his weekend at Mobility Resort Motegi played out slightly differently, with teammate Francesco Bagnaia leading the way through qualifying, before securing victory in the Sprint and Sunday’s race. But with Alex Marquez not scoring points in the Sprint, and finishing 6th in the Grand Prix, two 2nd place finishes for Marc Marquez were more than enough to secure the World Championship.
Following an incredibly emotional cool-down lap with his fellow riders each taking a moment to congratulate him, surrounded by cheering fans, a tearful Marquez stopped at the side of the track for his celebration - a video prepared by his management and friends, showing the unbelievable journey Marquez has been on since he was last crowned MotoGP World Champion in 2019.
As with Marquez’s previous World Championships, there was a theme to this year’s title celebrations, though 2025’s was less focused on the excitement of victory, and more on feelings of immense gratitude and determination. “More than a number”, reflects the significance of his comeback, and the challenges he has faced through a series of injuries and surgeries that left many doubting whether he would ever win a race again, let alone a World Championship.
In a truly incredible display of dominance during his first season with the Ducati Lenovo Team, Marquez’s journey to the title this year has seen him achieve 11 Grand Prix victories, 14 Sprint wins, and a staggering 541 points. Marquez has already beaten the record of most points scored throughout a MotoGP season, previously held by Jorge Martin, and with five rounds still to go in this year’s season, these numbers are likely to continue increasing.
His seventh MotoGP title now sees Marquez standing equal with the number of championships won by Valentino Rossi, and just one away from the all-time record of eight titles, set by Giacomo Agostini. But as his celebration stated, for Marc Marquez, this title is so much more than a number.
