MotoGP Recap - A Weekend of Firsts at Mugello
03 June 2026Round 7 of the 2026 MotoGP season treated fans to more thrilling on-track action and incredibly emotional victories at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello, for the Brembo Grand Prix of Italy.
2025 MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez made his return to the paddock this weekend, following recovery from his double surgery. Marquez was initially cleared to ride in FP1, before later being cleared to participate in the rest of the weekend’s action.
Following the incidents last time out at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Ducati test rider Michele Pirro stepped in to replace Alex Marquez in the BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP garage, whilst Johann Zarco’s spot at LCR Honda was filled by former MotoGP rider and three-time Grand Prix winner with LCR Honda, Cal Crutchlow.
Aprilia claim first ever MotoGP front row lockout
Aprilia Racing’s Marco Bezzecchi set a new all-time lap record of 1’43.921 during Saturday’s Q2 session, to take his first pole position since the opening round in Thailand. Trackhouse MotoGP Team’s Raul Fernandez came through Q1 with Pedro Acosta to take 2nd on the grid. After breaking the all-time MotoGP speed record with a jaw-dropping 368.6km/h during Saturday’s FP2 session, Bezzecchi’s Aprilia Racing teammate Jorge Martin completed the front row, giving Aprilia their first ever MotoGP front row lockout.

Fernandez takes maiden Sprint win
Raul Fernandez became the latest addition to the list of MotoGP Sprint winners after a brilliant ride on Saturday saw him achieve his first Sprint win, as well as the first Sprint victory for the Trackhouse MotoGP Team. Despite Marc Marquez getting the holeshot, Fernandez took to the front early in Lap 1, and held onto the lead, finishing 1.2 seconds ahead of Martin. Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team’s Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium, taking 3rd place in front of his home fans.

Bezzecchi victorious in home Grand Prix
Marco Bezzecchi claimed an emotional victory in Sunday’s race, as the MotoGP Championship leader achieved every rider’s dream of winning their home Grand Prix. Taking the lead on Lap 14, Bezzecchi rode faultlessly to become the sixth Italian rider to win in MotoGP at Mugello, also giving Aprilia their first Grand Prix victory at the circuit. Martin finished 3.5 seconds behind his teammate to finish 2nd, and Ducati Lenovo Team’s Francesco Bagnaia fought back against a last lap move from Ai Ogura to secure 3rd, ensuring Ducati featured on the Grand Prix podium during their centenary celebrations.

Gonzalez dominates in Moto2
LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP’s Manuel Gonzalez secured back-to-back Moto2 victories after a stunning performance saw him lead the entirety of Sunday’s Moto2 race. Gonzalez finished over 5 seconds ahead of Celestino Vietti, who came from 16th on the grid to secure a podium at his home race. The final podium position was claimed by Daniel Holgado, after narrowly beating Senna Agius to the line. Victory for Gonzalez extends his lead of the Moto2 Championship, as he sits 34.5 points ahead of Izan Guevara.
Uriarte secures his first Moto3 win
Moto3 rookie Brian Uriarte took an impressive first victory in the Moto3 class on Sunday, in a race where the result was impossible to predict right up to the final corner. Impressive battling throughout the field saw numerous riders competing for a spot on the podium, but it was Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Uriarte who took the victory, ahead of teammate Alvaro Carpe, with Hakim Danish finishing 3rd, claiming his first podium in the Moto3 class.
O’Shea achieves best ever Moto3 finish
After starting from 13th on the grid for Sunday’s Moto3 race, GRYD MLav Racing’s Eddie O’Shea worked his way through the field to be amongst the podium fight, with Lap 12 seeing him take the lead of a Moto3 race for the first time. Although the British rider slipped out of the podium spots during the final lap, O’Shea achieved his best Moto3 race result of 6th, with his teammate Joel Kelso crossing the line in 9th.
After an incredible weekend for Aprilia, Bezzecchi and Martin remain at the top of the MotoGP Championship standings, but with 15 rounds still to come in the 2026 season, their lead is far from secure. Round 8 sees MotoGP travel to Balaton Park for the Grand Prix of Hungary - what can Ducati and KTM do to help Fabio Di Giannantonio and Pedro Acosta close the gap to the Aprilia Racing duo?
