MotoGP’s visits to Australia and Malaysia see another maiden MotoGP victory, as the Moto2 Championship battle intensifies

MotoGP’s recent visits to Phillip Island and Sepang International Circuit gave us more new winners, impressive racing, and yet another dramatic twist in the Moto2 Championship battle.

First Grand Prix for 98 Races without a Ducati on the front row

The 2025 Grand Prix of Australia marked the first time in 98 races where a Ducati did not feature on the front row. Fabio Quartararo’s final qualifying lap saw him take pole position with a new all-time lap record, an impressive fifth pole of the season for Quartararo. Aprilia Racing’s Marco Bezzecchi qualified in 2nd, whilst home hero Jack Miller came through Q1 to claim 3rd  - his first front row qualifying result in over two years, and the first time two Yamahas have started from the front row in MotoGP since the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix.

First MotoGP win for Raul Fernandez and Trackhouse

Qualifying on the second row of the grid, Raul Fernandez had shown he was definitely one to watch over the weekend, and soon confirmed this with a 2nd place finish in Saturday’s Sprint, joining Marco Bezzecchi and Pedro Acosta on the podium. A brilliant weekend for Fernandez was made even sweeter on Sunday, as he secured his first Grand Prix victory with a superb display of dominance, also marking Trackhouse MotoGP Team’s first win since they joined the MotoGP grid in 2024.

Bezzecchi clinches Grand Prix podium desipte double long lap penalty

Marco Bezzecchi’s form at Phillip Island was simply undeniable, and nothing showed that more than him clinching a podium in Sunday’s Grand Prix of Australia, despite completing a double long lap penalty. Getting the ideal start, Bezzecchi set himself up perfectly to take his long lap penalties with minimal position loss, building up a gap of over a second between him and 2nd place before taking his long lap penalties and rejoining in 6th position, before eventually finishing 3rd, behind Fabio Di Giannantonio.

GP25 woes continue for Bagnaia

Francesco Bagnaia’s success at Motegi a few weeks ago felt like a distant memory at Phillip Island, as the struggles that he has faced at various points in the season with his GP25 machine were very much present once again. Bagnaia could only manage to finish 19th in the Sprint, and crashed out of 12th place in Sunday’s Grand Prix, with 4 laps to go.

Senna Agius takes moto2 victory at home

A stunning display from Senna Agius saw him leading from the first corner, all the way to the chequered flag, becoming the first Australian rider to win in Moto2 at home. A fierce battle raged on behind Agius throughout the race, as seven different riders eyed up potential podium finishes, with David Alonso and Diogo Moreira taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. With Manuel Gonzalez finishing 7th, Moreira’s podium closed the Championship fight to just two points.

Moto3 World Champion Rueda continues his winning ways

Newly-crowned Moto3 World Champion Jose Antonio Rueda took his tenth victory of the 2025 season, ahead of Australian Joel Kelso, with Alvaro Carpe taking the final podium spot. Jacob Roulstone, who had also been hoping for strong results at his home Grand Prix, crashed out of 3rd position during Lap 3. Roulstone was later declared unfit for participation in the Malaysian Grand Prix due to a fracture in his left hand, and has since also been ruled out of the Grand Prix of Portugal.

Bagnaia Sprint victory in Malaysia

Securing his third pole position at Sepang International Circuit in three years, Francesco Bagnaia was clearly determined to improve upon the results from his recent race weekends. Leading every lap of Saturday’s Sprint in Malaysia, and finishing over two seconds ahead of Alex Marquez in 2nd, Bagnaia’s victory was impressive, but even he was reluctant to comment on whether the victory marked a turning point for him and his struggles this season.

Alex Marquez secures 2nd in MotoGP Championship

A 2nd place finish in Saturday’s Sprint was enough for Alex Marquez to secure the runner-up spot in the 2025 MotoGP Championship, making himself and older brother Marc the first brothers to be MotoGP World Champion and runner-up in the same season. With his previous best MotoGP season of 2024 seeing him finish 8th in the standings, Alex Marquez has set himself up as a serious title contender for 2026.

Fermín Aldeguer is the 2025 MotoGP rookie of the year

Despite receiving an eight second penalty due to low tyre pressure following Saturday’s Sprint, demoting him from 3rd to 7th and bringing Pedro Acosta up to the final podium spot, Fermin Aldeguer scored enough points to be officially declared the 2025 MotoGP Rookie of the Year, giving both sides of the BK8 Gresini garage reason to celebrate. Aldeguer currently sits 8th in the Championship, 107 points ahead of closest rookie Ai Ogura.

Alex Marquez rides to victory in MotoGP Grand Prix of Malaysia

Alex Marquez took his third MotoGP victory of the season on Sunday in Malaysia, 2.5 seconds ahead of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pedro Acosta. Bagnaia was on course for his second podium of the weekend, until he was forced to retire on Lap 18 due to a puncture in his rear tyre. This late drama promoted Joan Mir to 3rd, which he was able to hang onto to secure another podium finish for the Honda HRC Castrol team.

Dixon takes emotional Moto2 race win, whilst Championship lead swaps hands following crash for Gonzalez

With a crash from Joe Roberts during Lap 2 of Sunday’s Moto2 race bringing out the red flags, allowing marshals to move his bike from the side of the track, Moto2 saw a shortened race of 11 laps, with riders starting from their original grid positions. Sporting a special helmet as a tribute to his late grandfather, Jake Dixon made the most of the restart to claim a highly emotional race win, dedicating the victory to his grandfather and celebrating with family. David Alonso and Barry Baltus joined Dixon on the podium, with Baltus mathematically still in the title fight, 35 points behind the Championship leader.

The gap between Manuel Gonzalez and Diogo Moreira in the Moto2 Championship standings has been steadily decreasing, and this weekend showed us once again that the title battle is far from over. With 3 laps remaining in Sunday’s race, Gonzalez crashed out of 5th place, ahead of Moreira who was riding right behind him in 6th. Gonzalez was able to remount, and eventually finished in 25th, but a 5th place finish for Moreira means that he now leads the Moto2 Championship, 9 points ahead of Gonzalez.

Furusato becomes a Moto3 race winner, after frightening sighting lap crash sees Rueda and Dettwiler airlifted to hospital

Taiyo Furusato picked up his first Moto3 victory in Sunday’s Grand Prix of Malaysia, finishing 1.7 seconds ahead of Angel Piqueras and Adrian Fernandez. Sunday’s Moto3 race was reduced to 10 laps, following a frightening incident during the sighting lap, involving Jose Antonio Rueda and Noah Dettwiller.

After receiving medical assistance trackside, the two riders were airlifted to a local hospital. Red Bull KTM Ajo have since revealed that Rueda sustained a severe concussion, as well as bruising on his lungs, and a fracture in his hand that will be operated on in the coming days. CIP Green Power’s most recent statement confirmed that Dettwiler had undergone several surgeries following the incident, and is now in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Marc Marquez confirmed to be out for rest of season and also missing Valencia test

In a video posted during Media Day at the Grand Prix of Malaysia, Marc Marquez confirmed that after further check-ups and meetings, he has made the decision to not compete in any remaining rounds of the 2025 season. This choice comes as Marquez continues to recover from the injuries he sustained at the Grand Prix of Indonesia, and will see him also miss the Valencia test.

The penultimate round of the 2025 MotoGP season sees teams travelling to Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, for the Grand Prix of Portugal. Miguel Oliveira will be looking for a good result at his final home race in MotoGP before his move to World Superbikes next season, and the battle for the Moto2 title is sure to bring us even more drama.
