Russell controls the race from pole

George Russell made the perfect start from pole and held off Verstappen through the opening corners to keep the lead. A first pit stop on Lap 13 saw him rejoin in traffic, but a decisive move on Charles Leclerc on Lap 27 ensured he maintained control of the race.

Once the front-runners cycled through their second stops, Russell returned to the head of the pack on Lap 54 and managed the final stint with guile. His first win of the season allowed him to close in on Verstappen, Norris and Piastri in the standings.

Norris crashes out after charging drive

Lando Norris started seventh on Hard tyres and gained ground early with a pass on Alonso for sixth. As others pitted, Norris had moved into the lead by Lap 17 and extended his first stint before switching to Mediums on Lap 29.

A final stop for Hards on Lap 47 saw him rejoin in sixth, but he quickly caught team-mate Piastri and applied heavy pressure in the final stages. He lunged at the hairpin on Lap 66, but Oscar fought back.

As the papaya pair started Lap 67, Norris’s front wing clipped the back of Piastri on the main straight, ending Lando’s race instantly and delivering the first serious blow to the so far harmonious driver relationship at McLaren.

Hamilton steady in fifth for Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton lined up fifth and held his place in the opening laps, pitting on Lap 15 for Hard tyres. He returned to the pits on Lap 45 for a second set and stayed in seventh before gaining a place due to the McLaren crash.
The result promoted him to sixth at the flag for another solid, if unspectacular, finish with Ferrari.

Bearman slips back after early midfield tussle

Ollie Bearman started 13th and held position early on, but a tough scrap with Isack Hadjar and his own team-mate shuffled him backwards through the pack.

An early first stop allowed him to make steady progress back up the order and a second stop behind the late Safety Car endured he lost no further ground, missing out on a points finish by one position in 11th.

Piastri’s podium threat fizzles out

Oscar Piastri started third but dropped to fourth at Turn 1 after being passed by Kimi Antonelli. He pitted on Lap 16 for Hards, then again on Lap 45 for a fresh set and emerged in sixth.

In the final stint, he found himself defending hard from team-mate Norris. The pressure mounted across several laps until the pair came together on Lap 67 with Norris running into the back of Piastri at full speed on the start-finish straight.

Although his team-mate was forced to reitre, Piastri continued unscathed and crossed the line fourth, adding 12 valuable points to his extended championship advantage.

Verstappen takes second in unremarkable outing

Max Verstappen held position in second at the start and looked to apply pressure to Russell early on. A pit stop on Lap 12 for Hards kept him in contention, followed by a second stop on Lap 37.

Although he kept pace with Russell for the duration, Verstappen never had the pace to mount a proper challenge. He eventually finished second, taking his first podium since he won in Imola.
