Norris battles hard but falls short in strategy gamble

After losing two spots off the line to Russell and Alonso, Lando quickly made his way back past the Aston Martin on Lap 3 and held fourth, tucked in behind Russell until the Mercedes headed for the pits on Lap 20.

McLaren opted for a one-stop strategy with Norris, bringing him in much, much later than his rivals on Lap 31.

That decision paid dividends, as he rejoined in fourth and made his way back into the lead as Leclerc, Piastri and Russell made their second stops.

Having made inroads early in the stint,  Lando had a nine-second advantage over team-mate Piastri once he’d cleared the Ferrari on Lap 51.

The final 20 laps were fast and faultless from Lando, and he held off a late charge from Piastri to finish just seven tenths clear to take his fifth win of the season and McLaren’s 200th Grand Prix victory.

Piastri’s late charge nearly steals the win

Piastri delivered another outstanding performance at the Hungarian GP, narrowly missing out on his seventh win of the season after a strategic showdown with Norris.

Piastri held second at the start and closed in on the leader during the first stint. He pitted on Lap 19 for Hard tyres in a bid to undercut Leclerc, but the Ferrari covered him off with a stop one lap later.

After a second stop on Lap 46, Piastri emerged with fresher tyres and began reeling Leclerc in. He made a stunning move around the outside at Turn 1 on Lap 51 to snatch second and began chasing down his team-mate.

Having made up the nine-second deficit, Oscar lunged at Lando into Turn 1 during the final laps, but couldn’t make a move stick, so eventually settled for second.

Russell grabs podium with brave late move

George Russell made a strong start, gaining a place from fourth to third at Norris’ expense at Turn 1.

After pitting on Lap 20, he fought his way past Gabriel Bortoleto and Fernando Alonso who were yet to pit, and managed to stay in contention.

A second stop on Lap 44 dropped him to fourth and back behind Leclerc, setting up a tense exchange as the pair diced through traffic late in the race.

On Lap 61, Russell made a lunge into Turn 1 that finally stuck, securing third place and his first podium since the Canadian Grand Prix.

Another tough day at the office for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating start, dropping from 12th to 14th in the opening laps on the Hard compound tyres.

His fortunes didn’t improve when Max Verstappen forced him wide at Turn 4 on Lap 30.
When he finally pitted on Lap 43 for Mediums, the superior grip helped him to progress at Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz’s expense.

Even so, he couldn’t make his way past Isack Hadjar and Kimi Antonelli to make it into the top ten, and eventually crossed the line in 12th.

Bearman’s promising run ends in retirement

Ollie Bearman’s bad luck continued in Hungary. He climbed from 11th to 10th on Lap 1 and stayed within striking distance of the points for much of the Grand Prix.

Unfortunately, a mechanical issue forced the Haas rookie to retire on Lap 50, cutting short what looked like a potential top-ten finish.
