Oscar Piastri celebrates winning the 2025 F1 constructors' championship with McLaren

McLaren crowned 2025 F1 Constructors’ Champions: A 10th title secured in Singapore

McLaren is back at the very top of Formula 1, following up their 2024 Constructors’ title with another, more dominant campaign in 2025.

For the first time since the 1990 and 1991 seasons 34 years ago, the Woking team has secured back-to-back Teams’ Championships.

With confirmation of their 10th Constructors’ Championship in 2025, team papaya has sealed one of the most dominant campaigns in history, a season defined by its ultra-quick pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, still battling each other for the Drivers’ World Championship.

McLaren’s 2025 season in review

After clinching their ninth title in Abu Dhabi 2024, McLaren entered this season with plenty of momentum.

Back then, even with a car that was the class of the field, few could’ve predicted just how complete their 2025 campaign would be.

From the opening rounds, they established themselves as the benchmark, pairing a seemingly invulnerable car with a duo of drivers hungry to capitalise on a golden opportunity to secure their first F1 title.

Piastri on a charge

Apart from Round 1 at his home race in Melbourne, Oscar Piastri firmly stamped his authority on the opening nine events, taking five victories – including three in succession at Bahrain, Jeddah and Miami – and three further podiums.

The Australian was in imperious form, rarely putting a foot wrong, while team-mate Norris came unstuck in qualifying more often than he would’ve liked.

While Red Bull showed flashes of form with wins for Max Verstappen at Suzuka and Imola, McLaren consistently executed race weekends with clinical precision. By mid-season, the lead they had in the Constructors’ championship looked unassailable.

Norris turns up the heat

Following his faux pas in Montreal where Lando broke motorsport’s golden rule – don’t crash into your team-mate – the Brit went on a tear winning three of the next six races and finishing second in another two.

In this period, McLaren won five races on the bounce, picking up four back-to-back 1-2 finishes to cement their place at the top of the standings.

Bouncing back after Baku blunder

McLaren had its first shot at sealing the Constructors’ title in Azerbaijan, but an uncharacteristic set of mistakes from Piastri and a seventh-place finish from Norris delayed what now seemed an inevitability.

Despite consecutive wins for Verstappen at Monza and Baku, as well as Mercedes surpassing Ferrari for second in the standings, McLaren edged ever closer towards F1 history.

Third and fourth in Singapore, although slightly contentious between its drivers, was enough to secure the title for McLaren, who became only the second team in the history of the sport to break into double figures of Constructors’ championships.

Season highlights

  • Seven 1–2 finishes in China, Miami, Spain, Austria, Silverstone, Belgium and Hungary and with six rounds still to go, the possibility remains to break Mercedes’ 2015 record of 12.
  • McLaren’s dominance was at its peak from Austria to Hungary, with the winning margin being over 19 seconds for four successive races.

These moments not only secured massive points hauls, but showcased a team operating in harmony, with drivers, engineers and strategists all performing at their absolute peak.

When things didn’t go to plan

Championships aren’t won without bumps in the road, and even a season as dominant as 2025 has its share of hiccups.

  • Norris’ Montreal misdemeanour was a sizeable blemish on McLaren’s scorecard.
  • An engine failure at Zandvoort signalled that the team weren’t invincible.
  • Azerbaijan proved costly, with only six points scored between both drivers after a costly DNF for Piastri.

But what separates the great from the truly remarkable competitors is how they recover from setbacks.

Following the clash in Canada, Norris came back swinging and won the next two races, and after the disastrous Azerbaijan weekend, McLaren returned to the podium at Marina Bay to secure the championship.

Drivers’ Championship: Still all to play for

While the Constructors’ is now decided, the 2025 Drivers’ Championship battle remains very much alive.

McLaren’s pairing has pushed each other all year, trading wins and refusing to yield, and now, with the resurgence of Verstappen, neither one is going to let up until the final flag drops in Abu Dhabi.

Who will take second in the 2025 Constructors’ Standings?

While McLaren has wrapped up the championship early, the battle for second remains fierce.

  • Mercedes: 325 points
  • Ferrari: 298 points
  • Red Bull: 290 points

That fight looks set to be one of the stories of the closing rounds with Red Bull and Verstappen back on song, Mercedes’ consistency becoming an undeniable factor in recent races, and Ferrari’s volatile performance window remaining ever the unknown quantity.

Looking ahead: 2026 and the new regulations

With the 2026 F1 regulations on the horizon, the question now is whether McLaren can carry this dominance into a new era.

Driver consistency counts in the team’s favour, as does team personnel that they’ve bolstered over the past few seasons, but history tells us regulation overhauls, more often than not, transform the pecking order.

With every team up and down the paddock dedicating huge amounts of resource to the new cars, it’s likely the reigning champions will face fierce competition to retain the title.
