A race getting underway at Kart Silverstone

How to get started in karting

Every journey into karting starts the same way, with a few tentative first laps, and before you realise, your first session has gone by in a blur.

But for some, those who return for more and more sessions, there comes a point when you realise that you might want to get serious about this. So, then you start asking yourself what’s next?

From first drive to first race

For those who want to take things a little more seriously, there are a few steps of progression that are often followed:

  • Arrive and drive: Arriving at your local track – like Kart Silverstone – and trying your hand at driving in a few one-off practice sessions
  • Rental racing: This is where things start getting competitive. A lot of rental kart circuits offer individual race sessions, or even championships to compete in, using their own karts.
  • Club racing: If you want to take things even further and get your own kart, racing gets even more professional and even more intense.

Each step builds on the last as you gain more confidence and more consistency. And the beauty of karting is that you can choose how far you want to take it.

Getting started in kart racing

If you’re thinking about taking the plunge, the pathway is far more accessible than you might think.

You can get started by returning for regular practice sessions to improve your pace and build consistency, and, when you feel ready, you can book on for your first race or championship round at your local rental kart circuit.

From there, you’ll learn more about the inner workings of racing and might want to take things even further.

Club championships offer an accessible way to compete with your own kart, while national series provide a route for those looking to push further, but may require sponsorship and additional resources to be competitive.

While professional racing might feel like a dream too daunting to even consider, almost every F1 driver started exactly where you are now.

Licences, clubs and what you actually need

The idea of racing licences and regulations can sound intimidating, but at entry level, it’s refreshingly straightforward.

For competing at rental circuits in one-off races or championships, there’s no need for any licence or previous experience at all. You can just book on, turn up, and race.

For club-level racing, there’s a little more required. Each series and each circuit has different requirements, but in a lot of cases, you will need:

  • A basic racing licence (depending on the series)
  • Your own safety gear (helmet, suit, gloves)
  • Access to a kart (owned or hired from a professional team)

Why karting is the foundation of motorsport

There’s a reason karting serves as the first step on the long road to professional motorsport.

It teaches you all the foundational skills that are carried right the way through to the best series in the world, such as racecraft, overtaking, precision, consistency and how to cope with the pressures of wheel-to-wheel competition.

That’s why almost every top driver in modern motorsport began in karting.

But karting doesn’t only serve as a stepping stone to F1. It’s a discipline in its own right, with its own championships and its own thriving community.
