A Maiden Win and Another World Champion Crowned, as MotoGP Raced in Indonesia
16 October 2025Last time out, a dramatic weekend unfolded at the Pertamina Mandalika Circuit, with impossible to predict events causing surprising results in all three classes. The highs and lows of the sport were on full display as victories were celebrated for some, whilst others began or continued their journeys to recovery.
New faces featured in Q1 and Q2 for MotoGP in 2025
For the first time in the 2025 MotoGP season, newly-crowned World Champion Marc Marquez failed to secure a direct spot in Q2, and was instead one of the ten riders to feature in Q1. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider was able to set a time fast enough in Q1 to graduate through to Q2, along with Fabio Di Giannantonio.
Contrasting this, Prima Pramac Yamaha’s Miguel Oliveira made it directly through to Q2 for the first time this season, meaning Somkiat Chantra is now the only full-time MotoGP rider who hasn’t made it directly to Q2 so far in 2025.
Rookie Fermin Aldeguer claims first MotoGP victory
Fermin Aldeguer put on a stunning display to secure his first premier class victory, becoming the second youngest MotoGP winner, and the first rookie to win in MotoGP since Jorge Martin in 2021. The victory also continues Gresini’s impressive record - since they became an independent team in 2022, every rider competing in the MotoGP class for them has won a Grand Prix.

First lap crash sees Bezzecchi and Marquez collide
A crash on Lap 1 of Sunday’s Grand Prix saw Marco Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez tumbling violently through the gravel, with both riders needing to visit the medical centre following the incident. Whilst Bezzecchi sustained no serious injuries, additional medical checks in Madrid confirmed that Marquez fractured the base of his coracoid process and injured the ligaments in his right shoulder - thankfully unrelated to his previous career-changing injuries. Though it was first advised that a conservative approach would be used in his recovery, Marquez has since undergone successful surgery on his shoulder blade. To facilitate his recovery, Marquez will miss the Australian and Malaysian Grands Prix, with Ducati’s test rider Michele Pirro replacing him at Phillip Island.

Moto2 title fight rages on as Moreira closes in on Gonzalez
The Moto2 World Championship battle has closed up as Diogo Moreira took his third victory in the class, taking further points out of Manuel Gonzalez’s Championship lead. Gonzalez crossed the line in 2nd, but a technical infringement identified after the race resulted in the Championship leader being disqualified, meaning the gap between Gonzalez and Moreira in the standings now stands at just nine points. The disqualification promoted Aron Canet to a podium finish - an impressive feat having qualified in 21st, and keeps his title hopes alive.
Rueda secures Moto3 World Championship
A series of unpredictable events were the backdrop for Jose Antonio Rueda finally securing the 2025 Moto3 World Championship at the Grand Prix of Indonesia. Rueda was running in 2nd when red flags were brought out during the penultimate lap of the Moto3 race, following an incident involving Adrian Fernandez and David Muñoz. His hopes of clinching the title seemed confirmed as his two closest Championship rivals, Maximo Quiles and Angel Piqueras were both given long lap penalties for a shortcut at Turn 9. Whilst Piqueras chose to serve his penalty at the earliest opportunity, Quiles chose instead to catch up with the leading trio of Muñoz, Fernandez, and Rueda before serving his penalty.
The incident and subsequent red flag led to confusion in Parc Fermé, as although Adrian Fernandez was leading the race at the time it was stopped, he was given a double long lap penalty for the incident with Muñoz, meaning Rueda was promoted to the win - victory number nine of the season, making his title celebrations even sweeter.
There was then further shuffling as Quiles, who crossed the line in 3rd, was viewed as having not taken his long lap penalty, due to red flag rules stating that the race result should be declared from the previous full lap. As Quiles hadn’t served his penalty at that time, it was viewed as being incorrectly completed, and he was given a three second penalty, dropping him to 4th. As a result, Rueda was joined on the podium by Luca Lunetta and Guido Pini.
The 2026 MotoGP grid is complete
We now know the full line up for the 2026 MotoGP grid, following the announcement that LCR Honda have signed Diogo Moreira on a multi-year deal. The 2024 Moto2 Rookie of the Year will be the first Brazilian MotoGP rider since Alex Barros in 2007, and will be one of two rookies on the 2026 grid, along with Toprak Razgatlıoğlu.
With just four rounds remaining in the 2025 MotoGP season, teams and riders are heading to Phillip Island this weekend for the Liqui Moly Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. With Marc Marquez out of contention, who will rise to the occasion and take the victory?
